Gender and Development Action (GADA) in collaboration with Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) recently held a Town Hall Meeting on Violence Against Women (VAW) for household heads, senior officials of the Mushin Local Government Secretariat, Lagos, leaders and members of Mushin community.

Non-Governmental organisations as well as other international agencies have come to realize the importance of concerted efforts by society to fight Violence Against Women (VAW). Therefore, the theme for 2009 Women’s Day Celebration, Unite to End Violence Against Women, was to reinforce this position.

The “Unite to End Violence Against Women” campaign call by the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon was an encouragement for men and women to join hands in opposition of violence against women, ‘because only by acting together can we create more equal and peaceful societies.’

The so-called market woman is the metaphor for resilience; her life typifies the female’s will to survive under the most trying conditions. The target for overzealous local government official who chase her from from pillar to post, she has mastered the art of being ubiquitous; and despite the often squalid nature of her business environment, she manages to live to a ripe old age.
