16 Days of Activism on Violence Against Women.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence started in 1991. It runs from November 25, International Day against Violence to December 10, International Human Rights Day to symbolically link Violence Against Women (VAW) and human rights, and to emphasize that VAW is a violation of human rights. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action describes VAW as “any act of gender based violence that results in or likely to result in physical, sexual, or psychological harm or arbitrary deprivation of liberty whether occurring in public or private life”.
As a leading women’s organization, Gender and Development Action (GADA) has been in the forefront of the struggle for gender equality and the promotion of women’s rights in Nigeria. GADA will be organizing a programme during the 16 Days Activism Against Gender Violence. In line with the theme for this year- 2009 Women’s Day which is “Unite To End Violence Against women” our programme has been tagged “MEN AND WOMEN UNITING FOR HAPPINESS”. It is a community awareness campaign highlighting the role of men in eradicating gender –based violence that will take us round the streets of Lagos. |
