Agriculture and Gender Justice in Nigeria: A study of Ogun Waterside. |
|

|
The frontiers and implications of the biological difference between men and women have been subjects of continuous studies. But the social and economic impact of the diverse roles society assigns to men and women had remained a subject of speculation till more recently. There had been the tendency to assume that policies, programmes and projects based on economic growth variables will benefit men and women equally. On the contrary, many countries have witnessed the failure of development paradigms lacking in gender considerations. The failure manifests in various ways of which the perpetuation of female poverty is strong evidence.
In Nigeria development practitioners and women’s rights activists have faulted the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) including its State and Local Government counterparts SEEDS and LEEDS is Export Oriented Agriculture. Gender and Development Action (GADA) decided to study this policy to determine how far women are getting the benefit and also the impact it has on their livelihood.
This publication is a report of the research GADA carried out with the support of Heinrich Boll Foundation (HBF) on the case of cassava crop in Ogun Waterside Local Government of Ogun State.

Gender and Government Revenue Drive: a Study of Two Markets

The social and economic impact of the diverse roles society assign to men and women had remained a subject of speculation until recently.
There had been the tendency to assume that policies, programmes and projects based on economic growth variables will benefit men and women equally. On the contrary, many countries have witnessed the failure of development paradigms lacking in gender considerations. The failure manifests in various ways of which the perpetuation of female poverty is strong evidence
In Nigeria little effort has been put into understanding the impacts o government revenue generation on men and women.
GADA with the support of Heinrich Boll Foundation (HBF) carried out a study of two markets in Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State to determine whether internal revenue generation systems in the informal sector impose heavier burden on women than men. The research findings show that even there are no gender differentials in the rates being paid in both markets, the women who make less profit than men, feel less satisfied and more burdened with the payments they make. This exposes the lack of equity in gender neutral modes of revenue collection.

Domestic
violence is a critical social problem that has assumed an alarming
dimension in Nigeria. One reason identified for the persistence
of domestic violence is the mismanagement of the problem by law
enforcement agencies. In recognition of the growing nature of these
types of violations in Nigeria and the growing demand it places
on the Police Force, GADA in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert
Foundation organised a three-day national workshop on Domestic violence
for Police Instructors, media practitioners and civil society, which
eventually culminated into this publication.

Gender and International Trade: The Nigeria Situation
|
| |
Due to adverse socio-cultural factors, women face more difficulties in overcoming obstacles to their full and effective participation in the economy. In Nigeria, women have limited access to training in the area of understanding the intricacies of international trade.
This publication however, is the outcome of public education programme carried out by GADA with the support of Open Society Initiative of West Africa (OSIWA) on gender and international trade as part of continuous effort to create awareness on the dire need to mainstream gender into commerce especially at global level. It also gave a full report of workshops that brought together Civil Society Organisations, Media Practitioners and other stakeholders to look at Gender and International Trade.

‘WE
THE PEOPLE and the LOCAL GOVERNMENT SYSTEM’ |
| |
Constitutional
debates in Nigeria appear to be the business of a few. Many others
do not see or understand that the constitution makes far-reaching
recommendations that affect their day-to-day existence. This handbook
is an attempt to capture in very basic sense the provisions of the
constitution as they relate to local governments. It is also hoped
that simplification of the issue will get many more people interested
in this all-important document as a means of promoting and supporting
constitutional democracy. It also looks at other provisions in the
1999 constitution relating to local governments to the role of both
the officials operating the system and the people on which their
operation has significant impact. |
